Second Step/Second Noble Truth/Second Stage Dependent Arising

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Once you have determined that the solution to your problem is not in you, you are ready to engage the 2nd step. If you are sure you do not have the solution and you are really powerless, then does that mean that it is hopeless and no solution exists. The 1st step would be a sad affair if that is where this ended. If I could not balance my check book, no matter how hard I tried and as a result checks kept bouncing, I would have to either give up or seek a solution somewhere outside of myself. I could look for an expert at teaching people to balance their check books and go to her for help. A person, that had the solution, I could not find myself, would be a power greater than me. It would be foolish to settle for hopelessness without first looking everywhere possible to see if there is help for me out there.

2. The Cause of Suffering

The cause of suffering is captured in The Nobel Truth of the Cause of Suffering. The cause of suffering, the mechanism by which suffering is created is threefold. Suffering is caused by craving, hatred and the desire for solidity. Suffering results from wanting life to be other than it is. We want what we can not have. What is sweet will become bitter. We want to be free from what we can't escape. Most of all we want to be permanent, solid and free from the changing conditions from whence we spring. This is the cause of suffering.

2. Action (we act on our lack of awareness like robots)
