The general purpose of the Computer Literacy Specialty Group (CLSG) will be two fold. The primary objective will be the treatment of issues related to chemical dependance such as refocusing the client on the potential for alternative healthy behaviors, increasing the clients sense of self-efficacy, defeating self-limiting beliefs that may interfere with the ability to envision a more productive and fulfilling life style. As the client over comes problems related to computing, the client begins to see the possibility of becoming a successful problem solver, facilitating the generalization of that self view into other areas of their lives. On this level, the projects will be designed to produce positive outcomes and stress personal interaction with a trained Substance Abuse professional.

The secondary objective will be to augment the clients vocational outlook by giving the client a very basic introduction to computing, similar to the kind of training a beginning temporary worker would recieve if they went to work for a temporary service. Given the ubiquitous nature of computers in todays work place, to be able to say you had five days training in basic computing would give you a better opportunity in landing a job. Each client will be given the opportunity to complete a simple resume, to use the Internet to check the classifieds and other job search related materials. There would also be assistance in researching social service and educational resources such as the Michigan Unemployment Agency or the Employment and Disability Network by using the World Wide Web.

Who should be referred to the Computer Literacy Speciality Group (CLSG)? Initially the number of available slots for group participation will be limited. Referral to this group should be based on the likelihood of the client getting the greatest benefit from this type of activity. Each counselor will look carefully at the personal circumstances of the individual client being referred. A vocational deficit may be an indicator that a client may get benefit from the CLSG, but since under employment can be a contributing factor to an unfulfilling recovery, a lack of a vocational deficit should not exclude the referral of a client in and of itself. Other considerations for referral might include, an expressed interest in this type of training, the expectation that the client will gain from computer literacy training and that this type of training does not interfere with any other levels of substance abuse treatment.

Each client will move through four levels of computer literacy training which will be structured progressively.

1) Basic key boarding and mouse use. This will be accomplished using simple game software.

2) The basic functions of executing an application, creating, saving and printing a file will be taught, including elements of simple word-processing.

3) Each client will be shown how to recieve and send an email message.

4) Each client will be taught to use the World Wide Web to do job and/or educational research, as well as to complete applications to appropriate social support agencies. Client's will be encouraged to research chemical dependency issues. Client's will also be given an opportunity to assist in the creation and maintenance of an SHRC web page, designed to promote recovery and SHRC as an institution.

Prior to a client beginning the CLSG, there will be an orientation to the use of the equipment and each client will be asked to sign an acceptable use policy statement (please see appended) which will include guidelines for participation the CLSG.
